Design concept
Design conceptA backyard that feels like another room of the house.
Every space we design starts with how you want to use it: morning coffee under a pergola, dinner on a covered porch while it rains, a garden of raised cedar beds, a quiet studio at the end of the path.
We design each project for your home and your yard, and our crew of highly skilled craftsmen builds it with care, so the finished space feels luxurious, beautiful and entirely yours.

What does Backyard Craftsman do?
Backyard Craftsman designs and builds custom outdoor living spaces: decks (including composite decks and pool decks), fences and gates, pergolas and gazebos, covered and screened porches, sheds and garden studios, and planter boxes.
Where does Backyard Craftsman work?
We work across the Portland metro and Lake Oswego, from Gresham to Hillsboro and south to Salem.
Who is behind Backyard Craftsman? Are you licensed?
Backyard Craftsman is a brand of Razumovsky Construction LLC, a licensed Oregon contractor, CCB #182566. We design and manage each project, and our crew of highly skilled craftsmen builds it.
Do I need a permit for a deck in Portland or Lake Oswego?
In the City of Portland, an uncovered deck needs a building permit when any part of the walking surface is more than 30 inches above the ground. Lower decks usually don’t need a building permit, but zoning setbacks still apply. Covered decks and porches, and other cities such as Lake Oswego, have their own rules. We check the rules for your property and handle the permit when one is needed.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Usually not. In Portland, a wood fence up to 7 feet tall doesn’t need a building permit unless it encloses a pool. Zoning still limits height; in many zones a fence in the front setback can only be 3 and a half feet tall. Lake Oswego and other cities set their own limits, so we check before we build.
Should I choose cedar or composite?
Cedar costs less up front and looks natural, but in our rainy climate it needs regular cleaning and sealing. Composite costs more but needs less upkeep. We build with both, and we will talk through the trade-offs for your space.
What affects the cost of a deck, pergola or fence?
The main factors are the size of the project, the site (slope, access, soil and drainage), the materials you choose, structural or permit requirements, and built-in details such as stairs, railings, benches, planters and lighting. After we see the space and agree on the scope, we give you a fixed price with no hidden fees.
Do you build covered and screened porches?
Yes. We design covered and screened porches to match the character of the house, build them to code, and handle the permit when the project needs one.
What happens at the design consultation?
We meet at your home, walk the space with you and talk through how you want to use it, your ideas and questions, materials and practical advice for a smoother project. After the visit we prepare a quote for your project.
Are the pictures on this site of finished projects?
No. The images on this site are design concepts that show the kinds of outdoor spaces we can design and build. They are not photos of completed projects.
How do I get a quote?
Call or text (971) 242-4048, or send a few details through the contact page. We will set up a design consultation at your home to talk through ideas, answer questions and plan the project.
